Dear staff member
I am writing to encourage you to seriously consider having the Astra Zenica Covid vaccine if you are 50 years of age or older.
I also want to point out that we all need to have the flu vaccine again this year if we work in residential facilities or clients’ homes; this is the case unless we have specific medical advice that we should not have it.
The Covid vaccine option
Australia is a very isolated part of the world at the moment, but despite that our health authorities are worried. They are worried that more and more returning travellers are testing positive in quarantine hotels and they are testing positive to the new variants of the virus, which are much more contagious and more dangerous to all age groups. Things are quite safe for the moment, but the simple reality is that the pathway back to a normal world requires that the vast majority of us need to be vaccinated.
So I am asking you to not put this off, but to seriously consider having the vaccine now.
As I am sure you know, the Astra Zenica vaccine is the vaccine being given to people over the age of 50 in Australia. You will also know that this vaccine has been associated with a very rare blood clotting side effect and some people are sitting back and putting off being vaccinated. In general, the risk from the Astra Zeneca vaccine is tiny, and we have much more risk of being killed in a car accident during the year.
Of course you have to consider your own circumstances and make your own judgement, but please don’t rely solely on information that comes through social media. If you do have any concerns about getting the vaccine, please speak with your doctor and then try to come to your own informed judgement, whatever that might be.
The Flu Vaccine
NSW Health have announced that from 1 June 2021 all aged care staff (and visitors) having any contact with residents or community care clients will need to have had the 2021 flu vaccination. So, unless you have legitimate medical reasons as why you should not be vaccinated, if you have not already received the flu vaccine you will need to arrange this before the end of May. We will be running another flu vax clinic on 26th and 27th May and we will have more information to you this week about how to book in.
Please also be aware that you need to allow two weeks between any Covid vaccine and the flu vaccine.
Christmas in July celebration
As you know, we were hoping that we would be able to safely have a large staff party in July. Unfortunately, this Christmas in July party idea is on hold for the time being, but we will monitor things over the next month or so.
If you have any questions at all please raise them with your supervisor or ring Jenny Fahy on 9832 5418.
